Being an aunt is the only job where you get all the chaotic perks of parenthood with zero of the discipline. You get to supply them with ear-splitting plastic toys, teach them completely unhinged jokes, and—when they inevitably lose their minds—politely hand them back to your sibling and walk away! I was ecstatic when I found out I was going to be a Girl Aunt. Bonus that, like me, she is also the first-born daughter, niece, grand AND looks just like me. I was an aunt before a mother so my niece was 100% my child. Her mom is JUST doing 100% of the hard work.😜 We have the exact same attitude, but I get the version of her that eats ice cream, while her mom gets the version that refuses to put on shoes. What You'll Need
Baby Bodysuit Onsies: 100% cotton works best for everyday iron-on.
- Iron-On/HTV: Everyday iron-on or specialty vinyl (like SportFlex for stretchier fabrics).
- Cricut Machine: Any model works (Maker, Explore, or Joy).
- Cutting Mat: StandardGrip or LightGrip.
- Tools: Weeding hook, scissors, and a brayer (to smooth vinyl).
- Heat Source: Cricut EasyPress, household iron, or a heat press.
- Protective Sheet: Teflon sheet or parchment paper.
Preparing & Cutting the Designs
- Open Cricut Design Space and upload theSVG file by clicking the download button.
- Measure the onesie. A good rule of thumb is to make the design around 3.5 inches wide for a 3–6 month size so it fits perfectly on the front.
- Click Make It.
- Important: Toggle the Mirror switch to ON. Iron-on vinyl is cut from the back, so your text/images will be backwards if you skip this step.
- Place your HTV on the cutting mat with the shiny side down (the dull side faces up). Load the mat and let your machine cut.
Weeding the Design
- Use your weeding tool to carefully poke and pull away the negative space around your design, leaving only your intended image stuck to the clear, sticky carrier sheet.
- Use scissors to trim away any excess plastic carrier sheet around your design to avoid press marks on the onesie.
Applying the Heat
- Turn on your Cricut EasyPress or heat press. Refer to the official Cricut Heat Guide to find the exact temperature and timing for your specific vinyl and fabric.
- Place a folded towel or an EasyPress Mat inside the onesie. This raises the main fabric slightly above the thick seams, ensuring even pressure.
- Pre-press the onesie for 10-15 seconds to remove wrinkles and moisture.
- Center your vinyl design on the onesie, about an inch down from the collar.
- Cover the design with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper. Press firmly with your heat source for the recommended time (usually about 30 seconds at 315°F for cotton).
- Flip the onesie over and press the back of the design for another 10–15 seconds to firmly set the adhesive.
- Let the carrier sheet cool to the touch (cold peel), then slowly peel it away at a 45-degree angle
