Gathering the family to announce a new baby is a core-memory moment. The instant shift from a normal family gathering to chaotic cheering, happy tears, and group hugs is pure magic. It is the beautiful beginning of a whole new chapter for everyone in the room.
To tell my family, we involved my niece and nephew. We were all together at my Grandmother’s for brunch with my aunt, uncle, parents, my sisters and their families. I made t-shirts and when I was in the other room playing with my niece and nephew, I asked them if they would help me share a surprise and told them I had their baby cousin growing in my belly. They were very excited to help. They changed into their new t-shirts and we went out to tell the family together. If you know my story, you know we went through A LOT before we were finally able to get pregnant so there were lots of happy tears all around and overwhelming joy.
Planning Your Reveal
Group Photo
Announce to the whole family at once by snapping a group photo and telling everyone to say “we’re pregnant!” instead of “cheese.”
Make it a Video: Act like you are getting ready to take a regular picture and then pop up with a onsie or sonogram right before the ‘picture’ is about to be taken.
Dinner Party
The Pizza Box: On the inside pf the box lid, write “We’re Pregnant!” and when someone goes to open the box at the table, the message will be revealed for all.
The Ultrasound Menu: Slip your ultrasound photo or a custom “Baby Coming Soon” graphic into the menu at a restaurant or on the dinner table.
The Seating Trick: When making a reservation, book the table for one extra person and have a custom “grandma/aunt” mug or a baby onesie sitting at that empty spot.
The Wine Bottle: Set out the wine glasses and a wine bottle in the chiller with the label “I can’t drink this right now, but you can!” and have the surprise revealed when the first person goes to pour the first glass of wine to kick off the celebration.
Game Night
Trick Charades: Act out prompts normally, then act out “being pregnant” for your team to guess.
Scrabble or Pictionary: Have the family draw cards that spell out “B-A-B-Y” or “We are expecting”
Far Away Family or Virtual
Custom Puzzle: Send a custom puzzle to distant parents or siblings on platforms like Etsy and let them piece the big news together.
Zoom: Schedule a virtual family call, and hold up your ultrasound picture or a sign that says “Baby [Last Name] Coming [Month] 2026”
