🥂 Hostess with the Mostess Tips

  • Hire help & entertainment: I had two of my child development students-age 17, to come for 4 hours total including 30 minutes before & after the party. They helped with setup and breakdown and watched the children in the playroom downstairs and the yard while the adults were able to drink & mingle upstairs. I also hired a facepainter for 2 of the 3 party hours: 30 minutes after the party started & before it ended to give guests time to arrive and get painted before cake time and the end of the party
    • BEST DECISION EVER! Parents LOVED it! It gave them a break to have real adult time while the kids had their own fun with other children and the face painting was the cherry on top. And loved it! Help with cleanup meant that I got to relax on the couch with a mimosa in hand and celebrate a successful party instead of dreading the mess waiting for me after everyone left.
  • Go for disposable: Skip glass and china around little hands. Modern, high-quality disposable plates, stemware, and mini utensils look incredibly elegant in photos, better than real dishes, and make cleanup effortless.
  • Work smart, not hard: Buy it, plate it, fake it: Don’t waste your precious time and energy baking from scratch when your local bakery or grocery store can do the heavy lifting for you. Buy high-quality, pre-made treats, ditch the plastic packaging, and arrange them beautifully on elegant platters. Your guests will be treated to a stunning display, and you will get to host your party instead of being trapped in the kitchen—all while taking credit for a picture-perfect presentation.
  • Save your Wallet & Look for Deals: I love hosting at home because it’s cozier, you have more control, better food, higher quality cocktails AND you save on the steep venue rental price. Invest in high quality serveware and decor that you can reuse for future events (I bought beautiful realistic silk flowers for our wedding 5 years ago-I still use it ALL.THE.TIME. All of our wedding events, Christmases, bridal showers, baby showers and birthdays-including this one. So worth it!) DIY when you can-see my tutorials, find coupons-like the Walgreen’s poster deals, use the evite.
  • Go digital: Evites are great! They allow you to track guests, create your own design, save money, easily send updates and collect photos from your guests in one location at the end of the event.

📸 The Posters

  • Decorate the Highchair: The highchair is the perfect place for a photo op with the birthday girl with her fans! They are adorable covered in cake and they are confined to their seat so it’s easy to get them to keep still for pictures. The icing doesn’t hurt either-When they have something sweet and delicious to focus on, they are more likely to be content which means less squirming, more smiles and a longer timeline to be able to get photos in.
  • Food temperatures: Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Serving food at room temperature isn’t just unappealing—it’s a quick way to give your guests food poisoning.
    • Hot Items: Keep the oven on warm, don’t pull them out until you are ready and invest in a warming tray to keep foods that are out warm.
    • Cold Items: Leave them in the refrigerator or freezer until you are ready to serve. Put items in the freezer for a bit to give them an extra chill. Use ice chilled condiment caddies or serving platters and drink coolers. And ice-lots and LOTS of it-you need more than you think.
  • Label It: I love labels-especially when they match the theme! Themed labels and framed signs give a party a high-end, curated feel. They provide clarity so guests know exactly what they are eating, flow to guide guests through the food line, and independence as clear directions let guests serve themselves easily. Clear directions at interactive stations let guests confidently build their parfaits, stack their pancake skewers, or shake up a custom mimosa or espresso martini.

🕒 The Strategic 3-Hour Timeline

    • Set the party time for 11:00 AM or 12:00 PM to fit a one-year-old’s happy morning or early afternoon mood-ideally after her morning nap.
    • Keep the party short, lasting no more than 3 hours so baby does not get too tired.
  • Welcome and Open Play
    • 11:00 – 11:30: Guests arrive, say hello, and unpack. Keep the birthday baby in a familiar environment so they can warm up to the incoming crowd without feeling overwhelmed. Low-key free play. Set up a play area with safe toys, play mat, or sensory bins to keep older toddler guests busy while adults mingle and grab a drink.
  • Food and the Main Event
    • 11:30 – 1:30:  Have the entertainment get started with your hired help-bubbles outside, facepainting, games with the kids, playdough making, etc.
    • Serve lunch or heavy finger foods. Keep it casual and grazing-style.
    • 1:15-1:30 Optional: Gift opening-depending on the temperament of your baby. IF you know you baby is on the fussier, less interested side-skip opening gifts during this window; one-year-olds tend to lose interest fast and get distracted, which can often lead to fussiness. So opening presents later in private is also a completely acceptable option.
  • Cake, the Wind Down and Goodbyes
  • 1:30-1:45: Sing “Happy Birthday” and do the cake smash. Do this right before the birthday child hits their overtired wall. Have cameras ready and expect a messy, adorable, and unpredictable few minute
  • Cleanup face/hands, change the birthday outfit if needed, and let kids do light free play.
  • 1:45 – 2:00: Final socializing, hand out favor bags as people drift out, and ease your 1-year-old into a quiet environment just in time for their afternoon nap.

📸 The Fits

Our baby until turns ONE once, so going all-out with matching family outfits and multiple wardrobe changes was a must. Her first is the ultimate milestone, and celebrating it in peak style creates unforgettable memories. 💖

And…she fancy so of course she needed multiple outfit changes to showcase her flair. Changing looks lets us capture every side of her big personality that we love so much—from the elegant princess to the messy cake explorer to our sassy little diva.

  • 16×20 Inch Repositionable Adhesive Posters- These were AMAZING! Such an easy addition and everyone loved looking at them as they made their way through the party. I selected a template, designed them on Canva, downloaded them as PDF files, uploaded them to the site and picked them up from Walgreen’s the next day. They stick and peel like post-its so they are easy to move around and they don’t cause any damage to your walls. At the time they were doing a $5/poster sale-they’re normally $32 each. I saved a crazy amount of money so look out for sales when you are getting ready to start party planning!

🍽️ Serveware

Do not risk your good glassware and china plates when little hands are near.  High-quality disposable stemware and plates look incredibly elegant in photos and make cleanup effortless. Especially when you are making many small items that require mini utensils and small cups. Today they make so many high quality disposable items that often look even better than the non-disposable options.

  • Pink straws, pink bows, pink pearl food skewers
  • White and gold serving trays, platters and tiered displays (These look like decor themselves, save space and add visual appeal to bite sized hors’ devours and even transferred pre-made desserts.)
  • Classy Disposable Stems, Tableware & Dessert Cups: Cup Trackers & Drink Markers: Provide sharpies or glass markers at the bar  . Labeling cups prevents accidental switch-ups—saving your premium alcohol and cutting down on a mountain of half-empty glasses.
