Method
- Generously butter a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Arrange the bread slices in a snug, single layer.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, whole milk, vanilla extract, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg
- Evenly pour the custard mixture over the bread slices, ensuring all pieces are soaked. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and take off the plastic wrap.
- Scatter the small pieces of 1/4 cup butter over the top of the soaked bread.
- Sprinkle a bit more granulated sugar over the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is puffed and golden.
- Sprinkle additional granulated sugar on top and broil for a few minutes until the sugar caramelizes.
- Serve the French toast warm with maple syrup on the side.
