Ingredients
  

  • 1 loaf French bread sliced into 1-inch thick pieces Forms the base of the French toast soaking up the custard mixture.
  • 5 large eggs The main component of the custard mixture providing richness.
  • 1 cup half-and-half Adds creaminess to the custard.
  • 1 cup whole milk Balances the custard's richness.
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Adds a warm aromatic flavor.
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar plus extra for topping Sweetens the custard and creates the caramelized topping.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon Adds warmth and spice.
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutme Complements the cinnamon with a hint of earthy spice.
  • 1/4 cup salted butter cut into small pieces Adds richness and helps create a caramelized crust.
  • Maple syrup for serving Adds extra sweetness and complements the flavors.
  • Whip Cream Optional Garnish
  • Powdered Sugar Optional Garnish
  • Fresh berries Optional Garnish

Method
 

  1. Generously butter a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange the bread slices in a snug, single layer.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, whole milk, vanilla extract, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg
  4. Evenly pour the custard mixture over the bread slices, ensuring all pieces are soaked. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and take off the plastic wrap.
  6. Scatter the small pieces of 1/4 cup butter over the top of the soaked bread.
  7. Sprinkle a bit more granulated sugar over the top.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is puffed and golden.
  9. Sprinkle additional granulated sugar on top and broil for a few minutes until the sugar caramelizes.
  10. Serve the French toast warm with maple syrup on the side.

Notes

Flavor Enhancements: Add orange zest or a splash of bourbon to the custard mixture.
Skip the Broiling: Dust with powdered sugar if you prefer not to broil.
