The Drunken Cucumber

The Drunken Cucumber

A refreshing summer cocktail that balances clean botanical gin with cooling, smashed cucumber and bright citrus.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Servings: 1
Course: Cocktail, Drinks, Gin

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Gin
  • 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice approx. 1 medium lime
  • 1 oz Simple Syrup or light agave nectar
  • 3 to 4 Thick Slices of English Cucumber plus extra thin ribbons for garnish
  • Ice cubes
  • 1 slice Watermelon Radish for garnish (optional)
  • 1 sprig Fresh Rosemary for garnish (optional)

Equipment

  • Muddler
  • Fine-Mesh Strainer
  • Cocktail Shaker
  • High Ball Glass
  • Vegetable Peeler

Method

  1. Muddle: Drop the cucumber slices into the bottom of an empty cocktail shaker. Pour in the simple syrup and fresh lime juice. Use a muddler to smash the cucumber thoroughly until it is completely broken down and juices are released.
  2. Combine: Pour in the 2 ounces of gin and fill the shaker halfway with ice.
  3. Shake: Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 15 to 20 seconds until the outside of the shaker gets frostily cold.
  4. Strain: Double-strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a rocks glass packed with fresh ice (double-straining catches any stray cucumber pulp or seeds).
  5. Garnish: Use a vegetable peeler to slice a long, thin ribbon of cucumber and press it against the inside wall of the glass before adding ice, add a watermelon radish wheel on top.

Notes

The Garnish:
The watermelon radish and rosemary are optional, but they make the drink so much more elevated!
Watermelon radishes instantly add visual appeal. Striking the perfect balance between nature and art, their pale green exterior opens up to reveal a vivid, sunburst-pink center. When thinly sliced and slipped into a glass, they bring a crisp texture and an unmatched pink-and-green aesthetic that effortlessly elevates any cocktail.
Fun Variations to Try
If you want to tweak the flavor profile, try adding these simple swaps into your shaker during Step 1:
  • The Herbal Twist (Cucumber Basil or Mint): Toss 5–6 fresh mint leaves or 3 fresh basil leaves into the shaker with the cucumber before muddling. It adds an incredible, bright backyard aroma.
  • The “Drunken” Elderflower: Reduce your simple syrup to 0.5 oz and add 1 oz of St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur. The sweet, floral notes pair beautifully with the botanical gin and clean cucumber.
  • The Spicy Cucumber: Slice a tiny wheel of fresh jalapeño or Thai chili pepper and muddle it right along with the cucumber slices. The capsaicin heat cuts through the icy, crisp cucumber perfectly.
